About Us
Michael Leroy Smith, the founder and owner of the Gallery, is an expert on both American Indian textiles and baskets. He has been a collector and dealer in American Indian Arts and Antiquities for over 35 years. His Gallery reflects his passion.
Michael and his wife, Laiyee, live in the same building as the Gallery, and so it is essentially their home, filled with historic Navajo and Pueblo weavings, antique American Indian baskets, contemporary baskets, historic and contemporary pottery, historic and contemporary paintings and other works of art. It is as though each room in the Gallery is the living room of a visionary collector. Beside stacks of blankets and rugs, you will find hundreds of the very finest American Indian antique baskets, and contemporary baskets from the Wounaan Indians living in the Darien Rainforest of Panama. You will also find very high quality historic and contemporary Pueblo pottery. In addition, the Gallery usually has a number of historic Southwestern paintings, a fine selection of contemporary landscape oil paintings by a local painter, Gregory Frank Harris; and a selection of fine embroideries by Lynn Stauffer, a Midwestern artist.
Our Canyon Road Location
If Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a center for the visual arts, then Canyon Road is its heart. The Michael Smith Gallery is centrally located at 526 Canyon Road. The building the gallery is housed in dates back to the early 1700's. Santa Fe was incorporated as a town in 1604. Canyon Road was used by the Spanish, who most likely followed an Indian trail, as a way to get into the canyon, which was a resource for firewood, vigas for building; also hunting, fishing, and a way to cross the mountains to Pecos and Las Vegas. For the last 50+ years people have been coming to this street to enjoy artwork in a sublime and pastoral setting. The Michael Smith Gallery is a ten-minute walk from Santa Fe's Plaza, and just a few centuries from the rural small farms and old Indian trails that form Santa Fe's roots.
How We Work
We are collecting for you. We are here to help you have beautiful things in your home. The gallery is our home. We appreciate art and beauty and surround ourselves with them at our home. We would like you to have the same. By sharing our passion and knowledge of the arts, we hope you may appreciate more of what you see. We will spend time with you on the history of textiles, understanding of basic weaving technique, identifying dyes of colors...
We like our customers and we want to work directly with them. However; we also have put most of our inventory on the website so that you can view it at home in ease, after you have visited our gallery. The website is also for the people who cannot visit our gallery and still want to have beautiful art in their homes. We invite you to phone or email us if you see something on this website that you are interested in. We promise you a hospitable, helpful, and genuinely warm reception.
